5e 2024 Rules Update VS Murkrag’s Compendium of Curios

Murkrag’s Compendium of Curios is compatible with the 2024 5e rules update!

After spending some time to review, the 2024 rules fortunately changed very little for magic items. We were nervous there for a bit! While we did find MCC to be compatible there are a few minor clarifications that are worth noting here. We’ll update this list if we discover more.

General Notes

  • The 2024 rules update introduced the term “Magic Action”. Generally, any magic item in MCC that requires an action to activate its effect should be considered a “Magic Action”.
    • For compatibility: Assume all actions are Magic Actions if they activate an effect of a magic item.

Item Specific Notes (Alphabetically by Item Name)

  • Malady (morningstar): This item lets you cast the spell contagion which had its effects significantly updated. The item says the “spell attack automatically succeeds” which is no longer relevant. The spell now also deals significant damage, making the item much more powerful, even for a very rare item.
    • For compatibility: Ignore the line “the spell attack automatically succeeds”.
  • Shillelagh of the Seven (club): The spell conjure woodland beings has changed, and the type of creatures summoned is no longer relevant. The item says “summoning 7 sprites” which can be ignored.
    • For compatibility: Ignore the line “summoning 7 sprites”.
  • Soulforce Armor (leather armor): The item says “In addition, you regain all expended hit dice at the end of a long rest, instead of half of your maximum.” With the 2024 rules, regaining all your hit dice on a long rest is the normal rule, so this line can be disregarded. Because it has lost its secondary effect, this item may be less powerful when compared to other legendary items.
    • For compatibility: Ignore the line “In addition, you regain all expended hit dice at the end of a long rest, instead of half of your maximum”.
  • Staff of the Ape (quarterstaff): As with conjure woodland beings, conjure animals has been changed and no longer conjures specific creatures. The reference to summoning “4 apes” can be ignored.
    • For compatibility: Ignore the line “summoning 4 apes”.
